Yes, we know, sunburn is painful and uncomfortable. However, the wider dangers surrounding the sun's rays are becoming more and more apparent and with that comes the need to find the perfect sunscreen. With this increase in concern in the ways that the sun affects the skin comes an increased choice of products on the market. Organic sunscreens are formulas that are mineral as opposed to chemical based and are the safest and most natural products on the market that fight UVA and UVB rays. There are a huge number of different brands from all over the world producing organic lotions and sticks that suit a variety of skin types. There is no denying that sunscreen is important, however, it's difficult to know what constitutes as a good quality product, protecting us from cancer, sunburn, aging and pigmentation problems. We have reviewed popular organic sun screens based on UV coverage, how the product absorbs into the skin, the smell, how easy it is to transport and more. We chose to avoid sprays for this review as its harder to gage how much coverage you're really getting. Although it’s convenient, creams and sticks are much safer and guarantee protection. Oh, and one more thing no matter how high the SPF is and how water resistant the sun screen claims to be, reapply reapply reapply.
Our Winner: True Natural Caribbean Coconut Sunscreen
With both moisturizing shea butter and antioxidant green tea this highly effective sunscreen takes the gold medal for us. Not only is it perfect for both the face and the body but the formula is gentle, alcohol free and mineral based. The scent is fresh and tropical and was liked by nearly all our reviewers, including those that would normally go for a scent free body cream. True Natural offer a broad protection against UVA and UVB rays whilst being gluten-free, cruelty-free and biodegradable. The sunscreen itself is remarkably light and nourishing. It absorbs into the skin easily and quickly, another reason why it's an excellent choice for all skin types. It’s also a perfect product for families as the smell and texture aren’t bothersome enough to cause children to resist application so all moms can breathe a sigh of relief! The price is slightly more expensive at just under $20 however it doesn’t break the bank and when it comes to skin protection its worth that little bit extra. The only downside is that it's not water resistant so if this is a priority for you, it's better to look elsewhere.
Best Stick: Living Libations - Organic / Wildcrafted Everybody Loves The Sunshine Beach Balm With Zinc
Living Libations skincare products are recommended by skin specialists as an organic alternative. Their SPF sunscreen range is also of a high quality, using the gentlest of ingredients making it suitable for most skin types. There are many benefits of using a stick as opposed to a lotion. First of all, it means that you apply the product 'hands free'. You know that feeling when someone is rubbing sand into your back? There's none of that. This means that the stick is also good for those with young children who see sunscreen application as a chore. It's quick, easy and can also be transported around easily without having to worry about leakages. In addition, this product is great value for money and it's for both the face and body so there's no need to invest in two different products. The stick's surface is much wider than that of a lip salve meaning that it's easy to get a good coverage all over the body. It glides on nicely and has a non- greasy feel due to the fact that its oil free and absorbs just as well on the body as the face. When applied to the face it doesn’t sting unlike many sunscreens on the market these days. It has a mildly spicy scent and includes red raspberry seed oil which some of our reviewers loved and others described as lingering and irritating. The only thing we didn’t like about the product was the fact that dirt gathers around the rim and unlike a cream, you're directly rubbing it over your body and face.
Best Water-Resistant Product: Nature's Gate Aqua Block Sunscreen Lotion
Nature's Gate Aqua Block Sunscreen is organic, cruelty free, and the packaging is even recyclable automatically giving it brownie points from us. The list of organic ingredients includes aloe vera, chamomile, shea butter, rosemary and more so we were really excited to test this luxurious sounding product. The aloe vera leaf juice sooths and hydrates skin with its added moisturizing qualities and the product is also fragrance-free meaning that it's great for those with sensitive skin. It’s a barrier sunscreen meaning that it automatically creates a barrier between the sun and your skin however it also means that the texture is thicker and takes much longer to absorb into the skin. Its specifically for water sports fanatics and it’s the most water-resistant product that we tested, protecting the skin at up to whopping 8 hours. Unfortunately, the cream is heavy and leaves white, chalky marks on the skin even after 15 minutes. Nature's Gate recommend that this cream is applied 15 minutes before entering the water however the reality is that it may need a bit longer. Despite the white marks, we found this sunscreen to give sufficient protection from the sun whilst being the most water-resistant sunscreen that we tested. It's also a bargain, however if you have a bit more to spend, we would go elsewhere.
