2018 iPhone Updates and Features Released

Notification: iPhone Update Now Ready (To Read!)

Apple held their Annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at the beginning of the month and boy did they have some updates for us. We were lucky enough to get the 411 on what went on behind closed doors and are here to fill you in on the latest changes that Apple have in store for their iPhone fans. Here's the latest Apple news.

The big update is that come the fall, iOS 12 will be the new kid on the block in terms of software, however in our eyes it's already king of the digital neighborhood. iOS 12 will bring us a new set of games, features and Siri options but as it's a beta release, we'll need to wait for the final version to be released before we can use it firsthand. Until the final version is released in late Fall, we'll have to make do with the most recent (and still pretty exciting) iOS 11.4 which lets you save and delete iMessages via the iCloud.

A few spoilers for the iOS 12 include the Memoji, a cuter more animated version of yourself and a more lifelike version of the well-loved emoji. It comes complete with hairstyles, eyewear, headwear and even freckles. Granted that Samsung may have pipped Apple to the post with their use of 3D emojis but Apple's Memojis are way cuter. Just like the Animoji, they'll reside on the iMessage interface however it will also use the FaceID camera to trace facial (and tongue) detection. The Memojis will be coming to iOS 12 in Fall so watch this space!

Next, iOS 12 brings users exciting Siri shortcuts. Based on your general activity, repeated behavior and upcoming events, Siri will be able to send suggestions throughout the day about information you may need. For example, if she can see that you're running late for an upcoming appointment she'll send a message for you. If she knows that you like to hit the gym at the same time on certain days, she will also bring up the fitness app. She'll basically be reading your mind and we can't wait to see if it will be a help or a hindrance.

iOS 12 also makes it possible to FaceTime up to 32 friends and you can even do it in the form of your Memoji. That is the entire size of your home room class. Who needs a high school reunion when you have the iOS12?!

Finally, an enhanced version of the Do Not Disturb app, a Screentime app (keeps you updated on your weekly usage) and various ways to keep tabs on your kids' usage are a few settings that are new to the latest software too.

Although there was more talk of new settings as opposed to new models, we did manage to get a sliver of information about plans for new 2018 models. Although users are mad about the OLED screen, one of the huge cons surrounding the iPhone X is its cost. The WWDC gave us some hope that 2018 may be the year that Apple bring us more affordable iPhones. In September, all-screen iPhones will be available for as little as $600 however you'll need to be prepared to go to extra lengths to get your hands on one. Apple have reported that there's a chance that they'll ship 20% less models compared to last year's figures. The new iPhones for 2019 are all predicted to use OLED screens too meaning visuals will be composed of high contrast and rich color. However, the price tag is tbc so it's up to you if you want to camp out over night for the new 2018 models to save yourself a few bucks.

Since it was founded 42 years ago, Apple have ensured that they have set themselves aside from their competitors by guaranteeing that they can control of every aspect of their products. In this day and age, we rely on our phones for absolutely everything which is why instead of bringing jaw-dropping changes to their hardware, they've made subtle but impressive changes to the software that help to make your real life and digital life sync. After attending the WWDC, all there is left to do is wait for until Apple give us more details surrounding the heavily anticipated iOS 12. Stay tuned for more info!
